  1. Technology is fluid and ever-changing. As educators it is our duty to "keep up" with technology so that our students can see the relevance and meaning to education. As a student once referenced...Disney's Alladin's Genie,"Phenominal cosmic powers. Itty-bitty living space."

  2. Advances in technology happen so fast that it is scary to think about what will be happening in our classrooms even in a few years. The world as they presented is changing even as we write this blog. What will are students be doing after they graduate? What as educators do to prepare them? The one part of the powerpoint that said about students analyzing, creating, etc. Those are the foundations of what we must teach them to make them have a chance in this ever changing world.

  3. In terms of a presentation it gets you thinking about what our students and our own children will be preparing for.
In terms of retaining any of the information from the presentation, I would be hard pressed to remember specifically the data.
In terms of a scare tactic to spend much on technology its very good.
To give the students a "wider than Hanover" view its effective.

  4. Technology is changing at a very fast pace. It makes me wonder what we will be doing with technology 5 or 10 years from now. How will this affect my teaching? As educators we need to be up to date with new advances and implement them to the best of our ability in our classrooms.
This video was presented in a way to get us to think about what will happen next with technology and it definitely got me thinking!

  5. The world is constantly changing. As teachers, we must keep up with the shifts in technology and teaching methods. We must continue to educate ourselves and make sure that our students are prepared to enter an ever-changing society.
This presentation used graphs, statistics, and other forms of data to create powerful statements. It makes us rethink and reflect on just how quickly things change locally and world-wide.

  6. The statement in the presentation that says “we are preparing children for jobs that don’t even exist” is always striking to me. We, as teachers, must not only teach the content of our respective disciplines, but we must be mindful to help the students develop the skills necessary to live in a 21st century global society.

    Evaluation of the presentation
I like the simple background and graphics because it enables the information to be the star of the presentation.

  7. The main idea in this presentation is that the world is changing more quickly than we can even imagine. The students that we have in our classrooms are going to have job opportunities available to them that weren't even imagined when they were born.

How do we decide what to teach students for careers that don't exist yet? How do we know what skills and knowledge they're going to need to have?

Beyond just content, students have to be taught how to make judgments about what they're reading. They need to understand how to read a piece of text and work out if it's a reliable and accurate. Anyone who can operate a keyboard can post information online and call it truth but a lot of this information is questionable at best (have you seen www.dhmo.org?). Students have to learn how to be critical thinkers and think for themselves.

I'd be really interested to see a 2010 version of Shift Happens, given just how much the world has changed since 2006.

  8. Big ideas--the students who are sitting in my classroom are more aware of and proficient with the technology that is available. Therefore, I need to advance my level of proficiency as well.
The ideas were presented in a way to challenge what the viewer was thinking. When the question or the beginning of the statement was given, the viewer developed a response based on their prior knowledge only to have that thrown out. There was certainly information that shocked first time viewers. I can only image how the numbers have changed in the last 5 years or so. What an eye opener!

  9. As educators I think it is our responsibility to try and keep up. We need to make sure that we don't get overwhelmed with the possibility of where things are headed. I am excited to see where new technologies can take my current/future students. The shift happens presentation truly gets you thinking about changes happening everywhere... is it excitiing or scary to think about?

  10. Again the big idea is that the manner in which we train our students needs to coincide with the changes, and the rates of the changes, that are taking place globally. As skill expectations for our students grow, so must the expectations for the quality of instruction and material that is presented to them. The presentation begins by making some basic connections with the viewer to peak their interest. From that point they add thought provoking material that asks the viewer questions without providing all the answers. The text is simple with highlighted words to drive home the point on some of the facts. This allows the viewer to focus on the key ideas and not get lost in all the text. The use of graphs and visual aids assists the viewer in being able to make connections and digest the material being presented.

  11. Big idea: Change, in a big way, is happening fast. Our global concepts often lag behind reality. Much of this is related to the almost unbelievable way technology affects us.

Many of the surprising facts presented involved the use of technology; in particular, the growing part it plays in communication. This certainly has to be considered when determining how to teach. What to teach, and why, has to be considered after such a presentation, too.

I like the shock/surprise approach of this presentation. It really opens the door for discussion. I think the presentation would move too quickly for many people.

  12. Yesterday we mentioned how education is a field that is continually changing, but when you compare a classroom of the past to a classroom of today the fundamentals are the same. I believe this video does a great job of expressing the need to better prepare our students for the 21st century. Technology gives educators the ability to tear down the walls of the traditional classroom and allow our students to communicate and collaborate with the entire world. Working with other students in the school, surrounding districts, other states, and around the world becomes a possibility. Lines of communication with experts in the field are now open for our students to explore. Students can publish their work rather than hand it in. I like how the video questions whether we are preparing our students for a world where these skills are not only a possibility, but also are a necessity.
